KOTA KINABALU: Twelve people were nabbed by the police for being involved in cockfighting activities in Sabah’s Tawau district.
Following a tip-off, the raiding team stormed a makeshift cockfighting ring tucked inside an oil palm plantation in Kalumpang as the punters were busy watching one of the matches taking place on Saturday (July 1).
Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said they raided the location at about 5pm.
“Everyone dispersed, running in all directions when the police stormed the place,” he said on Monday (July 3).
“However, we managed to apprehend 12 people aged between 17 and 71, and three of them were women. Eight of them were foreigners. We also seized seven cockerels, a number of gambling paraphernalia and RM1,210 cash,” he added.
Based on their probe, ACP Jasmin said the premises were frequently used to host cockfighting matches besides being a gambling den for other games.
He added the suspects have been remanded for further probe under Section 21 of the Animal Welfare Enactment 2015, Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 as well as the Immigration Act.
