‘Be wary of waterfalls’

PETALING JAYA: As search operations continue for four more victims of the water surge tragedy in Terengganu, Malaysians online were warning about holidays near waterfalls, especially when the weather is unpredictable.

“Kepala air (water surge) is so dangerous. It’s unexpected. And it is always too late when you realise it... Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun to all the victims,” posted Lina Maisurah (@LovelySeriCandy) on Twitter.

Many netizens spoke on the need to avoid waterfalls during periods of unpredictable weather.

“What a tragedy, so many lives lost. Can’t imagine having to suddenly deal with a body of water 5m to 10m high coming at you. With our unpredictable weather nowadays, these areas should be avoided,” Facebook user Kisha Sivapatham commented.

Another user, Max Lo, commented: “With the uncertainty of the weather these days, holiday makers should avoid going to waterfalls. To all parents concerned,” he said.

Hundreds of Malaysians also expressed their condolences to the victims’ families over the tragic loss of life.

“My deepest sympathy to this family, Salam Takziah,” commented Facebook user Rebecca Lihong.

“May the souls of the deceased be blessed, aamiinn and condolences to the victims’ families,’’ commented Hazrin Razali on Facebook.

A few remained hopeful of a miracle, spreading messages of hope for the victims’ families.

“Hopefully, there is a miracle for the victims who have not been found, especially the safety of the youngest four-year-old ... I don’t want to imagine the sadness if all family members are found dead,” commented Facebook user Zizie Adriana.

“I pray that search efforts go smoothly and all those yet to be found are safe,” commented another user Nor Hizan Wan Teh.
