Melaka govt never told Bandar Hilir night market traders to go, says exco member

MELAKA: The Melaka government has never issued notices telling night market traders in Bandar Hilir to move out of their present site, says an exco member.

Housing and local government, climate change and disaster management committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said a 55-second video of a woman making such claims is inaccurate.

"The video alleges that the state will force some 200 traders from Uptown Pahlawan Walk to move out. This is untrue," he said on Wednesday (July 5).

Rais said neither the Melaka Historic City Council(MBMB) nor any other department has issued such a notice.

On a related matter, he said the move to turn the tourist destination of Bandar Hilir into a vehicle-free zone is still in the trial phase.

In May, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the state intended to make the area vehicle-free from Fridays to Sundays, and that MBMB would meet the local business community and hoteliers to discuss this.

"Some agree and there are also some who oppose the idea.

"It is best that we get all the feedback before deciding whether or not to proceed with the plan," he added.
