Addressing 'sick' projects a challenge, says deputy minister

JOHOR BARU: The number of “sick” development projects in the country could exceed 1,000 this year if not for the Federal Government’s intervention, says Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir (pic).

The Deputy Local Government Development Minister said there were 481 sick projects nationwide as of April 30 where 52 were located in Johor.

“The figure could go higher than 1,000 without the ministry’s intervention and this is what we have been doing - visiting such projects from state to state to assess the situation to see how we can assist.

“The monitoring for this is different from the usual reports that property developers submit to the ministry on the status of their ongoing projects.

“It is a challenge for my ministry to address this matter and we are currently trying our best to improve the situation to prevent the number of sick projects from going higher,” he said in a press conference after visiting the Residensi PR1MA Larkin Indah housing project here on Thursday (July 6).

The Johor Baru MP added that there were several issues to iron out for the five-block Residensi PR1MA Larkin Indah project - also a sick project - and the target was for it to complete by the end of the year.

According to him, a development is categorised as “sick” when the construction progress has been delayed by more than 30% compared to its scheduled progress or upon the sales and purchase agreement expires or lapses.
