KUCHING: The charitable trust of Sarawak's Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) plans to expand into socio-economic programmes soon, says Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

The Sarawak Deputy Premier said the trust was currently seeking funds for its plans.

"While Unifor provides assistance for the physical development and maintenance of various houses of worship, its charitable trust will focus on socio-economic programmes to help deserving folk," he said after receiving a cheque for RM1mil from Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) for the trust here on Thursday (July 6).

The cheque was handed over by Petros chairman Tan Sri Hamid Bugo.

Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Unifor director Datuk Jack Aman and Petros chief executive officer Janin Girie.

Uggah called on the private sector to come forward and assist.

Hamid said Petros was honoured to help Unifor in its tasks and responsibilities.

"I hope that with our contribution, Unifor can do more to assist our society," he said.

Unifor is a state government unit which provides financial assistance to non-Muslim houses of worship and mission schools in Sarawak.

Its charitable trust is a separate entity set up under the Charitable Trust Ordinance to carry out activities for the wellbeing of the non-Muslim community in the state.
