MELAKA: A man has been arrested in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s son, who was reportedly sick at the time.
The 31-year-old was said to have kicked and beaten up the three-year-old child for staining a sofa at his home in Cheng here.
Also detained to assist investigation was the boy’s mother, 24.
Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the suspects were detained yesterday and a one-week remand order had been issued by the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh.
ACP Christopher said the mother had sent her child to the boyfriend’s house at 5.30am on Thursday.
“The child was unwell and the male suspect was supposed to take him for treatment,” he added.
He said about 40min later, the male suspect called his girlfriend to inform that the child was unconscious after falling from the staircase.
The couple then rushed the boy to the hospital.
“Medical officers at Melaka Hospital found the child in a serious condition and attempted to resuscitate him.
“The child succumbed to his injuries at 9.15am on Thursday,” said ACP Christopher. The post-mortem report showed that the child had severe injuries on his head and body.
ACP Christopher said during the preliminary investigation, the male suspect had admitted to beating the victim after the boy vomited on his favourite sofa.
