Six-hour downpour causes flash floods in Yan

ALOR SETAR: A downpour caused flash floods to hit 20 houses in Yan here on Saturday (July 8) night.

District Civil Defence (APM) officer Leftenan Muhammad Zul Izzi Zulkifli said among the worst hit areas were Kampung Bukit Teroi and its surrounding areas.

"Several areas in the district in Yan and Kampung Bukit Teroi were inundated following heavy rain for about six hours," he said in a statement on Sunday (July 9).

Muhammad Zul Izzi said the downpour, which began at about 10pm, caused the water level at Sungai Gurun to reach dangerous levels.

Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel in the area have also been instructed to monitor the water level of the rivers in the surrounding area.

The water level at Sungai Singkir at Kampung Singkir Genting was at normal level, he added.

Muhammad Zul Izzi said no temporary relief centre was activated.

He advised villagers to be on the alert if the rain persists and of rising river levels.
