Strong currents, high tide complicating search for Tuaran teen


KOTA KINABALU: Rescuers involved in the search for the teenager who fell from a suspension bridge near here are facing difficulties, says Tuaran Fire Station chief Mohd Abd Qawie Abdul Gapar.

He said the tide is higher and the currents are stronger as the search operation enters its second day on Sunday (July 9).

“Compared with Saturday (July 8), the water level of the river is higher and the current is stronger,” he said when contacted.

Abd Qawie said that rescuers hope to find the boy as soon as possible.

Mohd Hisham Iskandar Azli, 13, was swept away by strong currents after falling into the river at Kg Telibung in Tuaran at around 2.30pm on Saturday.

He was with five friends and they were taking selfies at the bridge prior to the mishap.

Hisham had slipped and his friends told firemen that two of them tried to rescue him by jumping into the river but failed as the currents were strong.
