Four nabbed over fight in Pontian – all for a RM20 debt

PONTIAN: Police have arrested four men in connection with a fight over a RM20 debt near a sewage treatment plant in Taman Megah here.

OCPD Supt Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the incident occurred at 4.45pm on Sunday (July 9) following a miscommunication between two men.

“One of the suspects, a 50-year-old man, had asked his friend, aged 22, to meet him at the site.

"He asked the younger man to settle his RM20 debt, which led to a quarrel,” he said when contacted on Monday (July 10).

Two other men who witnessed the fight were also held to assist in the investigation, he added.

“We also confiscated a metal rod from the 22-year-old suspect,” he said, adding that all the suspects are currently under remand until Thursday (July 13).

The case will be investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a maximum jail term of five years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
