PETALING JAYA: Six Peninsular Malaysia states are heading to the ballot box to elect their state assemblymen in what many are calling a mini general election for the country.
A total of 245 state seats will be up grabs in Kedah, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor and Negri Sembilan.
According to a rough calculation of 2022 estimated figures from the Statistics Department, the six states have a population of more than 15 million, of which about 10 million are aged 18 and above, making them eligible to vote.
In contrast, the last general election which was held eight months ago saw 15.5 million voters electing 222 MPs as well as state assemblymen in Pahang, Perak, Perlis and Sabah’s Bugaya state seat.

Size in perspective
In terms of land area, Penang's Pengkalan Kota state seat, which is just 1 sq km in size, is the smallest of all the seats in the coming election.
The largest is Telemung in Terengganu which is 3,246 sq km.
