SIBU: A university student here lost RM328,454 in an online job scam.
OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said on Sunday (July 9) the Commercial Crime Investigation Department received a report from the victim who claimed she was deceived in an online job offer that promised lucrative commission.
"The victim is a local in her 20s, studying at a local university.
"She was interested in getting a 5% commission by ordering goods over an app (purportedly from ecommerce portal Zalora).
"The victim then communicated with the seller to obtain a link from the app," he said on Monday (July 10).
ACP Zulkipli said the victim was required to make a payment for goods to an account number given, with the condition that the money must be transferred within 20 minutes.
From May 18 to June 30, the victim made 53 transfers to seven local bank accounts for the purpose of completing the order of goods to obtain the promised commission.
"She was informed that the commission would be credited in her account within 10 to 15 minutes.
"However, until the report was made, she did not receive any commission. She then realised that she had been cheated," said ACP Zulkipli.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
