Jail, rotan for robbing senior citizen

KOTA TINGGI: An oil palm plantation worker pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court to robbing and causing injury to a senior citizen earlier this month.

Nazry Mohamad Mokhtar, 37, was charged before Sessions judge Hayda Faridzal Abu Hasan here yesterday.

According to the charge sheet, the father of four robbed Rahmah Md Johan, 60, at a house in Felda Air Tawar 4 here at about 12.40pm on July 2.

He robbed the victim of a gold bracelet and also caused an injury to her, an offence under Section 394 of the Penal Code (Act 574) which carries a maximum jail term of up to 20 years and also a fine and rotan upon conviction.

The judge sentenced the accused to eight years’ jail and one stroke of the rotan and ordered the sentence to start from the date of arrest. DPPs were Muhammad Irsyad Mardi and Ahmad Khairuddin Khalid while National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Hilmi Sulaiman Salahuddin represented the accused.
