Sarawak to hold multi-faith thanksgiving ceremony to mark its 60th independence day

KUCHING: Sarawak's Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) will hold a thanksgiving prayer ceremony in conjunction with the state's 60th anniversary of independence within Malaysia this year.

Datuk Liwan Lagang, the deputy minister in charge of the ceremony, said it would take place on July 21 as one of the key events of the anniversary celebration.

He said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was invited to officiate the ceremony, where representatives from six religions will gather to recite their respective prayers.

"In the true spirit of Segulai Sejalai, the ceremony will start with the Baha'i prayer, followed by the Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Sikh, and Tao prayers.

"They will focus on the theme of prosperity, peace, political stability, unity and social inclusivity blessings upon Sarawak," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 11).

Liwan also said monthly thanksgiving prayer sessions were rotated among the six religions from January to June at their respective houses of worship.

"Each religion was assigned a special theme in conjunction with our 60 years of independence as a kickstart towards the special thanksgiving ceremony," he said.

More than 700 guests comprising ministers and deputy ministers, department heads and religious and community leaders will be invited to the ceremony.

Members of the public can join the event through its live broadcast on TVS and the Sarawak Public Communications Unit's Facebook and YouTube channel.
