State polls: DAP fearful of changing tide in Penang, says PAS

PETALING JAYA: DAP is "scared" of the swing of votes in Penang towards Perikatan Nasional, says state PAS deputy commissioner Mohd Yusni Mohd Piah.

"The shift of the people’s votes to Perikatan Nasional has become a concern for Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional, to a point where DAP has to play the 3R (race, religion and royalty) sentiment to gain votes," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 11).

"Insya-Allah, Perikatan will win close to 20 seats in Penang in the upcoming state polls," he added.

Mohd Yusni said of the 40 seats in Penang, 26 are mixed seats and 14 are Malay majority seats with at least 60% Malay voters.

"In the 15th General Election (GE15), the Malay seats in Penang swung towards Perikatan," he said.

Perikatan managed to win the Kepala Batas and Tasek Gelugor parliamentary seats from Barisan, and defeated Pakatan in Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s family’s legacy seat of Permatang Pauh, with Perikatan candidate Muhammad Fawwaz Muhammad defeating Nurul Izzah Anwar.

"Election Commission data shows that Perikatan won majority support from first time voters," he said.

Of the 40 state seats contested in Penang in GE14, DAP won 19, followed by PKR with 14, while Amanah, Bersatu and Umno have two seats each. PAS only managed a win in a single seat.
