PUTRAJAYA: The upgraded artificial intelligence (AI)-based violation detection cameras at selected traffic lights were implemented as a proof of concept to keep tabs on motorists' behaviour, says Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister confirmed that the system had been implemented even before he helmed the ministry.
"I was made to understand that this is not new.
"It is a proof of concept," he told reporters at the ministry's headquarters on Wednesday (July 12).
He had been asked to comment on a viral message that said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had initiated a widespread project to instal CCTV cameras with AI technology at traffic lights.
"The JPJ has started installing CCTV with AI that can record video of what you are doing at the traffic light.
"Those who always play with their handphones while waiting for the green light, please be careful.
"You may be issued with summons, don't say that you are not warned.
"Hopefully by sharing this information, it will serve as a reminder for all of us and to always remember that you are being watched through the CCTV," the viral message read.
On July 4, Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the state had embarked on an upgraded AI-based violation detection camera system to capture evidence of offences and provide data to better plan policies and enforcement action.
The proof-of-concept project at the accident-prone Merbau-Miri-Pujut traffic light intersection will collect data on drivers’ attitudes and behaviour and is already said to be showing impressive results within one week of its rollout.
The trial period for the project would be six months and the results will be presented to the state Transport Ministry to decide on the next course of action.
The data collected would help agencies plan effective enforcement action based on actual situations, particularly regarding misbehaving drivers and accident hotspots, Lee added.
