KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 26,506 traffic summonses have been issued for various offences during the "Respect Traffic Laws" operation here since July 3.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said as of Sunday (July 9), traffic obstruction was the most common offence with 18,931 summonses issued.
"Among the other offences are driving or riding on pedestrian pathways (1,931), locals with no driving licence (1,280), running a red light (478), using fancy number plates (299), stopping in the yellow box (216), and (miscellaneous) offences (3,217)," he told a press conference after attending the KL police monthly assembly on Wednesday (July 12).
A total of 800 personnel and officers are involved in the operation, which will be conducted until July 31, he said.
Its aim is to instil discipline among road users and also take action against infringements of traffic regulations.
"We detained 86 people for various traffic offences. We also seized 96 motorcycles, two cars and a lorry," he added.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily said KL police have received positive feedback from the public on the special operation.
"We will improve certain aspects of it from time to time. I will find other methods by discussing with the people in KL to change the habits and behaviour of road users so that they are more responsible," he said.
The police will not compromise in taking action against anyone who commits traffic offences, he added.
"Road users should not ignore road signs (which are there) for their own safety," he said.
