JOHOR BARU: Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim visited the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) commando headquarters as part of his three-day visit to the island republic.
Tunku Ismail, who is also the commanding officer of the Johor Military Forces (JMF), was accompanied by Singapore Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad at the SAF commando headquarters located at Pasir Ris on Wednesday (July 12).
During his visit, Tunku Ismail was presented with a close quarters battle demonstration and was also invited to showcase his shooting skills in a military shooting training routine.
The tour continued with an airborne demonstration and a tour of the camp in a SAF combat jeep.
On Tuesday (July 11), Tunku Ismail held a meeting with Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who is also the Finance Minister, at the treasury.
In a Facebook post, Tunku Ismail said Singapore was a strategic economic partner of the state and there was potential for greater growth in the future.
"The discussion focused on the proposed Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone to be set up in Johor and the further strengthening of trade and investment ties between Singapore and the state," said the statement.
Tunku Ismail is on an official visit, which started on Monday (July 10) at the invitation of Singapore Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
Tunku Ismail also attended a hi-tea together with Singapore's Minister of Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong at Shangri-La Hotel and witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Johor Football Association and Singapore Football Association.
"It involves cooperation in football development, including the establishment of an annual football tournament between the Johor Selection and Singapore Selection, beginning 2024."
Later, Tunku Ismail and his wife Che' Puan Besar Khaleeda Bustamam also visited the Kuo Chuan Presbyterian secondary school.
They were accompanied by Singapore Education Minister Gan Siow Huang and were given a briefing on the Singapore education system.
Also present was Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School principal Jason Tan.
