KOTA KINABALU: Five vehicles parked in a housing parking lot near Lintas here were partially buried when debris fell on them during a landslide brought by the downpour late Wednesday (July 12).
However, no casualties were reported and firefighters used hydraulic tools to pull out the cars.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department, they received a report of the incident at a covered parking space at Taman Publik Fasa 2 near there around 8pm.
The team from Lintas fire station rushed to the scene and found the cars partially buried under debris and trees and a collapsed roof.
“After retrieving the cars, the team set up barricade tapes around the affected area, and told nearby residents to avoid going near the landslide area.
“After ensuring no other risks on location, the operation ended at 10.17pm,” said a Department spokesman, adding that Civil Defence Force personnel were also on hand to provide reinforcements.
Natural disasters like flash floods and landslips had hit several districts in Sabah’s west coast following continuous downpour since Wednesday noon.
As of now, the situation has receded and improved on most areas when the rains stopped, however it was forecasted that the wet spell is expected to continue for the next two days, coupled with strong winds and thunder.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department had earlier stated that the bad weather was caused by a low-pressure system developing in the west of the Philippines, which was moving in a northwest direction towards southern China.
