KOTA KINABALU: Raising awareness about the importance of marine ecosystems is among the key focus areas of a local diving club that wants to do its part for ocean conservation.
Deus Diving Club (DDC) aims to provide its members with the chance to participate in conservation initiatives while taking part in enjoyable dives.
“It is a platform for divers to actively participate in conservation initiatives,” club president Sim Fui (pic) said yesterday.
“Our primary objective is to cultivate a community of responsible divers who appreciate and protect the underwater world.
“Together, we strive to make a meaningful impact on diving and ocean conservation.”
Deus Club, also known to divers as Sabah Dive Squad Club, has already garnered 100 members since it was formed a year ago.
Sim said that the divers shared a common goal of exploring the underwater world, preserving marine ecosystems and raising awareness of the importance of oceans.
Since the club’s formation in June 2022, the club has held 15 monthly leisure and refresher diving programmes at islands around the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, Sepanggar Island and Mantanani Island near Kota Kinabalu.
The club is also a part of the “916 Ocean Hero” programme, jointly organised with the Lion Club of Kota Kinabalu Vintage, as well as baby coral planting and ocean clean-up on Malaysia Day at Mamutik Island.
Sim said that the club had mapped out its activities that included enhancing diving proficiency among members, conservation projects and collaborations with relevant stakeholders to raise awareness of the ecological challenges facing our oceans.
DDC invites diving enthusiasts, ocean lovers and those interested in marine conservation to join the club.
