Malaysian parliamentary delegation holds meeting with French, EU Parliament members

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul led the delegation of Malaysian MPs to the French National Assembly and Senate as well as the Inter-Parliamentary Meeting between the Parliament of Malaysia and the European Parliament organised by the latter from July 11-13.

According to a statement on Saturday (July 15), the meeting with the French National Assembly was held to strengthen their cooperation in developing the economic agenda, climate challenges and environmental protection.

On the meeting with the European Union Parliament, Johari said: "Malaysia and the European Union share the same goal in ensuring the well-being of its people. I would like to stress that Malaysia values its close relationship with the European Union in upholding the values of freedom, equality and peace, as well as protecting democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”

"...the visit of the Malaysian Parliament delegation to the European Parliament is a manifestation of the desire of both parties to strengthen bilateral relations between Malaysia and the European Union," he said in the statement.

The MPs who took part in the visit were Special Select Committees chairmen namely Wong Chen (International Relations and International Trade), Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah (Finance and Economy), Datuk Jonathan Yasin (Security) and Yusuf Abdul Wahab (Infrastructure, Transport and Communications).

Johari led the Malaysian delegation to Strasbourg in the Meeting Between the Parliament of Malaysia and the European Parliament which was chaired by the chairman of the Delegation for Relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (DASE) Danial Caspary, read the statement.

"Malaysia has expressed its desire to cooperate and share ideas and technology with the European Union. This will also open up opportunities for the younger generation to be exposed to new technologies through technology transfer programmes.

"The discussion also touched upon deeper cooperation with the European Union to develop trade investment with Asean to achieve common goals," it added.- Bernama
