PETALING JAYA: Najwan Halimi has breached PKR’s code of conduct with his racial slur and the matter should be referred to the disciplinary board for the next course of action, says the party’s Youth wing vice-chief Prasanth Kumar Brakasam.
Prasanth was referring to the former Kota Anggerik assemblyman and Shah Alam PKR deputy chief’s remarks on Parti Sosialis Malaysia.
Najwan has since apologised for the incident.
“It is clear that Najwan’s comment had gone against the members' code of conduct under clauses 10.1.6 and 10.2.6 of the party’s constitution. This matter must be referred to the disciplinary board for further process,” he said in a statement Saturday (July 15).
“In short, we should not let this issue turn into a weapon or give room to the Opposition to attack the unity government, plus this issue should serve as a lesson for all of us to take care of the 3R (race, religion and royalty) sensitivity,” he said in a statement.
Prasanth added that a leader of the party should not have made a racist comment, given the fact that PKR is known for being a multi-racial party.
“His comments have hurt supporters and Indian members in PKR and the overall Indian community,” he said.
“The unity government led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is very serious in overcoming the issues related to religious, royalty and racial sensitivities,” he said.
In his apology tweet, Najwan said he will be careful with his statements in the future.
“I apologise to all parties who may have been hurt and will be more careful in making any statements in the future,” Najwan added.
He also said that such incidents would not be repeated.
PSM secretary-general Sivarajan Arumugam had called out Najwan on Twitter and posted a screenshot of the Shah Alam PKR deputy chief’s remarks.
According to the screenshot, Najwan had shared a news report on PSM’s Meru candidate Sivaranjani Manickam on a WhatsApp group and commented that the party was an “Indian estate party”.
