Nanny arrested after baby dies in Ipoh from suspected abuse

IPOH: A six-month-old baby girl has died from suspected abuse, say cops.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Hassan said the baby had died at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital on Friday (July 14) at about 2.50pm.

"On July 12, we received a report from the hospital that the baby had gone into a coma.

"There were some bruises on her body and the hospital suspected the injuries to be due to abuse," he said in a statement on Saturday (July 15).

"We had then investigated the matter under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act for neglecting or abusing a child that may lead to physical injuries," he said.

ACP Yahaya said the police arrested a 52-year-old woman, who was the baby's full-time nanny on July 13.

"After the baby died, we reclassified the case as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

"We have also obtained an order for the woman to be remanded for four days from July 14 to 17 to be investigated," he said.

"The post-mortem found that the cause of death was blunt trauma of the head," he added.

Police believe that the baby was already unconscious at the nanny's house in Taman Tawas Indah before she was sent to the hospital.

The nanny, who only started the job in March this year, had called for an ambulance to send the victim to the hospital.

The baby's parents work in Australia but were on their way back to Malaysia.
