PETALING JAYA: Those convicted of spreading contents with 3R (race, religion and royalty) elements have been fined a total of RM43,000 by the respective courts, says the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The commission said it received 100 complaints in relation to contents suspected of carrying sensitive elements from 2018 to June 30. Of the cases, nine had been filed in court, it said.
“Eight of the cases were found guilty, with those involved being fined a total of RM43,000, and another is still on trial,” it added in a statement yesterday.
In two cases, compounds involving a total fine of RM7,000 were issued, and warnings were given to those involved in three other cases.
The commission said four cases are still under investigation.
“We are gathering evidence and will determine the appropriate actions. The remaining 82 cases have been classified as ‘No Further Action’ or ‘No Offence Disclosed’ after they were carefully reviewed,” it added.
It said all the complaints were being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. It showed that of the cases, 40 involved religion followed by 34 involving royalty and 26 involving race.
The commission has urged the public to report to them if they come across cases suspected of inciting the 3R.
As the Aug 12 state polls in Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu are drawing closer, the commission said no topics or materials on the social media platforms have been found to contain 3R issues so far.
“The MCMC, together with the police, will remain vigilant on this matter and take strict action against irresponsible parties that touch on these elements. The government will not tolerate any instigation of hatred that may cause fear or panic among the public or result in instability and disharmony in the country,” it added.
