Govt should strike political peace deal with Perikatan after state polls, says Bersih

PETALING JAYA: The unity government headed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should sign an inter-coalition peace deal with Perikatan Nasional after the state elections, says Bersih.

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections said it was necessary to ensure political stability just as the memorandum of understanding signed by the Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob government with Pakatan Harapan in September 2021, which enabled 13 months of political stability.

"Anwar and parliamentary Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin should commit to negotiating a peace deal post-state elections.

"This can assure domestic and foreign investors alike, that Malaysia can focus on economic rejuvenation by crushing continuous rumours of midterm change of government that undermines political stability and market confidence," said Bersih in a statement on Sunday (July 16).

Bersih said Parliament can and must play a main role in a sustainable political peace till the end of 2027 which would require the empowerment of Opposition MPs and government backbenchers to not plot for the government collapse.

"A respect for the outcomes of election and government formation must go hand in hand with a level playing field that allows the Opposition to compete constructively and professionally.

"Bersih hopes that both the unity government and Perikatan would welcome this call positively in part to overcome political fatigue and apathy that are found among many voters and likely result in a dangerously low turnout in the state elections,” it added.
