MACC makes new arrest in Customs Dept contraband case

PETALING JAYA: An additional suspect has been arrested as graft busters continue their “Op Jaguar” investigation into a crime syndicate that sold Customs Department contraband.

"The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recorded statements from individuals and has raided relevant premises and homes. The MACC has also arrested one more individual to assist investigations, making the total suspects arrested to date eight people,” it said.

It added that it has also identified the enforcement agency officer that had collaborated with the syndicate that was disposing of and smuggling pangolin scales.

The MACC said this in a statement on Monday (July 17) and added that Sheikh Biman Sheikh Ahmad, 43, is currently being traced down by the MACC to assist in investigations into the case.

His last known address was listed as No 53 Jalan Sama Gagah 15 in Taman Telok Gedong Indah, Port Klang.

"Those with information on the man are urged to contact investigating officer Siti Norazirah Ramli at 03 8870 0249 or 019 855 7290. They can also email her at sitinorazirah@sprm.gov.my," it said.

On July 14, The Star joined the MACC as they raided a syndicate storeroom which was hidden in plain sight above a tyre factory in an industrial park in Klang.

The group was believed to have been selling pangolin scales in the black market, after bribing enforcement agency officers to allow them to take items meant for disposal from a Customs Department warehouse.
