JOHOR BARU: A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed between Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) and Al-Salām REIT for the construction of a pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) connecting Komtar JBCC and the planned bridge of the Bukit Chagar Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link station here.

Johor works, transportation and infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the 42m-long, and four to eight metres wide POB, will be accessible to the public by 2027.

"The POB is part of a network that will connect several buildings in the Ibrahim International Business District (IIBD) area.

"This is an initiative to further improve connectivity in the area, especially with the arrival of the soon to be completed RTS Link.

"It is currently in the design stage and we expect construction to begin by this year and completed by December 2026," he said, adding that the project will cost between RM10mil and RM15mil.

He said this in a press conference after witnessing the MOU signing between the AmanahRaya Trustees Berhad, the Trustee of Al-Salām REIT and MRT Corp.

Mohamad Fazli said that the pedestrian bridge will also allow the public to use the Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (IMBRT) service that will be available at the Bukit Chagar station and the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI).

"For now, the IMBRT is expected to be able to handle 10,000 passengers per hour that are expected to arrive in Johor via the RTS Link.

"The Johor Public Transport Corporation (PAJ) will conduct a study on whether there is a need to provide more buses to accommodate travellers who will be using the RTS Link once it has been completed," he said.
