KUCHING: Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) will support the unity government to ensure stability through its collaboration with the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), says its secretary-general Baru Bian.
He said this was vital in the face of growing polarisation in the nation's political landscape, particularly in Peninsular Malaysia.
"With the latest political developments where Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Perikatan Nasional, PAS and some Umno leaders are desperately making increasingly incendiary and divisive statements for political survival, there is reason for us to ensure that this unity government prevails,” said Baru.
"In view of the current political developments at federal level, PSB sees it fit to work closely to support the effort of the unity government," he said in a statement on Monday (July 17).
On July 13, PSB signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with PDP to work together towards ensuring political stability.
PSB is a local Opposition party while PDP is a member of the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition. GPS is also part of the federal unity government.
Baru, who is also Ba'Kelalan assemblyman, said PSB's public support of the unity government and the GPS coalition through the MOU was a move forward in a uniform direction.
"We cannot allow political extremists to take over the administration of Malaysia," he said.
Baru added that he was greatly concerned by the politicising of race, religion and royalty as well as Dr Mahathir's remarks that promoting a multicultural Malaysia was unconstitutional.
He said it was common knowledge that Malaysia was a federation of Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners.
"Nowhere is it stated in the Federal Constitution that Malaysia is a Tanah Melayu. Our forefathers would never have agreed to the federation if the idea was to become a federation of Tanah Melayu,” said Baru.
"It is truly disappointing that someone who was once considered a statesman could have descended to such depths to play the racial card in order to remain relevant," he added.
