State polls: Ex-ministry sec-gen to contest in Dengkil on Perikatan ticket

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional has unveiled its candidates for the Dengkil and Sungai Pelek state seats ahead of the official announcement of candidates for the upcoming state polls.

Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced on Sunday (July 16) that former Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Jamil Salleh would be the coalition’s candidate for the Dengkil seat.

Jamil served as the ministry’s secretary-general from 2016 until his retirement in 2019.

“He had retired from his post as the secretary-general of the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry and had just become a Bersatu member. We agreed to field a leader who has already contributed so much to the country as our candidate,” said Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin said this at the Ceramah Perdana Jelajah Selangor Baharu - Kita Bangkit PN Sepang on Sunday at the Markas PAS Labohan Dagang, where he also launched the Sepang Perikatan Nasional election fund.

As for Sungai Pelek, Perikatan will field Sepang Bersatu chief Datuk Suhaimi Mohd Ghazali.

In GE14, the Sungai Pelek seat was won by Pakatan Harapan’s Ronnie Liu with 13,484 votes, which is a majority of 6,585 votes.

However, the DAP man has announced that he is quitting his party after 41 years.

The Dengkil seat was won by Bersatu candidate Adhif Syan Abdullah with 21,172 votes, a 6,934-vote majority.

Muhyiddin also said the state polls will test the people’s acceptance of the federal government.

“Although we will only mark one box (state) on the ballot paper, it is said that it will send a signal whether the voters in all six states support the unity government,” he said while urging people to go out and vote.
