Zambry rubbishes Bersatu’s claims that Umno grassroots back Perikatan

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir has dismissed remarks by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu that Umno grassroots leaders and members have pledged their support for Perikatan Nasional in the state elections.

"As a politician, he will claim that he has the support from this and that. That is his personal view, and we have our own.

"We will give all of our efforts to make the country stable, to continue our work and give the best to the rakyat," said the Barisan Nasional secretary-general during a press conference at Wisma Putra headquarters on Monday (July 17).

Zambry was asked about claims made by Ahmad Faizal that Umno grassroots leaders and members have given their commitment to back Perikatan in the upcoming polls.

Zambry, who is also the Foreign Minister, said the focus of the unity government was to ensure political stability and restore confidence of investors to return to the country.

"That is our focus that is needed to put the country back to stability which is done under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who asked us to give full focus to rebuild the country.

"So in terms of having support or not, we will see it during the state elections.

"For us, at our level, we have confidence in our movement and our contributions in our efforts to preserve the momentum to create more growth for the country," he added.

Ahmad Faizal, who is also the Negri Sembilan Perikatan chairman, claimed that he received overwhelming support from Umno grassroot leaders and members during his visit to the state on Sunday (July 16) night.

"Umno grassroots leaders and members have privately met me to find ways to ensure Perikatan's success in the upcoming state polls.

"I was shocked, they even asked the Perikatan machinery to work hard to win in the six states.

"All have expressed their support for us. I met all the Umno division leaders, Wanita division leaders, Youth and Puteri, some even helped us to campaign," claimed Ahmad Faizal.

Polling day for the state elections for Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu has been set for Aug 12.

Nomination Day has been set on July 29, while early voting falls on Aug 8.
