SEGAMAT: A Year Five pupil at a Tamil vernacular school in Jementah here claims he was injured after being caned by his principal for not completing his homework.

Segamat OCPD Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said police came across a comment related to the incident on the district police’s Facebook page at 11pm on Tuesday (July 18) and urged the victim to come forward and lodge a report.

“About an hour later, the victim’s mother lodged a police report, claiming that the pupil received injuries to his cheeks, neck and shoulder after he was caned by his principal.

”Initial investigation revealed that the pupil was caned for not completing his homework and for not paying attention in class,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (July 19).

Supt Ahmad Zamry said the case was being looked into under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

The offence is punishable by up to 10 years' jail or a fine or whipping or any two of the punishments upon conviction.

“We are completing the investigation papers before submitting them to the Deputy Public Prosecutors for the next course of action.

“In the meantime, I urge the public to refrain from speculating about the matter further,” he added.

Supt Ahmad Zamry also urged the public, especially parents, to come forward to the police if their children have fallen victim to bullying or abuse.
