Trader on trial for having fake ringgits


KULAI: A trader who sells clothes online has claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here to possessing two notes of counterfeit money worth RM200 with the intention of using them earlier this month.

Cheoh Chuan Wang, 24, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him in Mandarin by a court interpreter in front of Magistrate Azureen Sahira Saufee Afandi yesterday.

According to the charge sheet, the accused, together with another suspect who is still at large, was found in possession of two counterfeit RM100 notes and had the intention of using them as genuine currency.

The act was allegedly conducted at a petrol station in Batu 21 here at around 4pm on July 1.

The act is an offence under Section 489C of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Act, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail, upon conviction.

Azureen Sahira set bail at RM4,000 with one surety and also set Aug 22 for case mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Eddlyn Wong prosecuted while lawyer Omar Kutty Abd Aziz represented the accused.

Cheoh posted bail.
