Malaysians among missing crew after cargo ship capsizes off Pulau Burung


KUCHING: Four Malaysians are among nine crew members missing after their cargo ship capsized off Pulau Burung, near Sebuyau waters, some 103km from here.

Sarawak Marine Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director First Admiral Maritime Zin Azman Md Yunus said the four missing Malaysians are Chieng Siew Ngiek, Wong Hua Wu, Maxwell Billy Stimba and Stimba Anak Chuit.

“The other missing people are Myanmar nationals That Min July, Ye Lin Htet, Hla Win Tun and Tun Lin Oo and Indonesian Lido Ali Purwanto,” he said.

"All victims are aged between 20 and 52," he added in a statement on Thursday (July 20) night.

He said the MMEA received the report of the capsized MV Tung Sung at around 9.40am before a search and rescue operation was launched at around 1.20pm

Azman said the MMEA's KM Kinabalu was moved to the location of the incident, adding that boat and air assistance from the police air unit were also deployed to the search area.

He said the search, involving an area of some 210.48 nautical miles, had been suspended at 7pm and would start again at 8am on Friday (July 21).
