Najwan’s racial slur regrettable, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his regret over a racial slur by a PKR leader, saying that it did not matter whether it was said in public or private.

“As a party leader, I regret what he said no matter (if) it is publicly or privately in this day and age, especially at this time before the state elections. I think everywhere, it is public

“The party leaders have said that the disciplinary board will look into his case, so I will leave it at that,” Fahmi told The Star.

Fahmi was commenting on Shah Alam PKR deputy chief Najwan Halimi who drew brickbats after a screencap of his message containing a racial slur against Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) went viral on social media.

PSM secretary-general Sivarajan Arumugam had called out Najwan on Twitter and posted a screencap of the remarks.

Based on the screencap, the Shah Alam PKR deputy chief had shared a news report on PSM’s Meru candidate Sivaranjani Manickam on a WhatsApp group and commented that the party was an “Indian estate party”.

Najwan has since apologised.

On whether Najwan had been referred to the party’s disciplinary board, Fahmi said no party meeting had been held yet.

“I can’t say more,” said Fahmi, who is also Pakatan Harapan information chief.

On Saturday, PKR vice- president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the PKR disciplinary board would decide whether or not Najwan should be penalised.

PKR’s youth wing vice-chief Prasanth Kumar Brakasam also called for Najwan to be referred to the party’s disciplinary board for breaching its code of conduct with his racial slur.
