Felda settlers' debt spat: Muhyiddin to sue Anwar for slander after no apology from PM

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is going ahead with his threat of legal action for slander against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The former prime minister said that this was after the current Prime Minister had failed to both show proof that he had written off Felda settlers' debts and apologise to Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin claimed that the document Anwar presented on Thursday (July 20) was about sukuk and not the debts.

"I have said many times that the document that Anwar signed was about sukuk and not disposing of the settlers' debts.

"As such the document shows that what I said was the truth and the one who lied and slandered me was Anwar," said Muhyiddin in a Facebook post on Thursday (July 20).

"The Finance Ministry's media release also confirmed that it is about a government guarantee of RM9.9bil and not about disposing of the Felda settlers' debts of RM8.3bil which I settled in 2021.

Muhyiddin said the sukuk document revealed by Anwar showed that he did not understand the contents of what he signed as Finance Minister which is dangerous as he could have signed other documents as Prime Minister and Finance Minister which he doesn't understand or was not aware of the contents.

"It is clear Anwar is incompetent to remain as Prime Minister and the longer he governs the country, the worse off the people would be," added Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin's former principal private secretary Datuk Dr Marzuki Mohamad on Thursday said the document released to the media by the Prime Minister's Office was an agreement on the issuance of government-guaranteed sukuk and not an 80% debt waiver of the Felda setters.

"The document released by the PMO does not prove that the debt waiver of the settlers was made only last June as this is about the issuance of government-guaranteed sukuk which was part of the cabinet decision back in 2020.

Anwar said on Thursday that Muhyiddin should apologise for slandering him as he has provided evidence that he had signed a debt waiver scheme for Felda settlers.

He said the document on the FSRA on the government guarantee of Felda debts signed by him was proof that the settlers' debts were waived.
