SIBU: The shortage of specialists and ophthalmologists at Hospital Sibu will be resolved starting July 31, says Lukanisman Awang Sauni (pic).
The Deputy Health Minister made this assurance after being briefed by the hospital's director Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu on Thursday (July 20).
The ophthalmology clinic of the hospital is experiencing a shortage of specialists and medical officers.
To a question on an increase in staff at Hospital Sibu, the Sibuti MP said the ministry would assess any shortage and evaluate the need for additional staff, especially in terms of expertise.
"It is certainly the desire of every hospital to enhance service capacity, especially in terms of expertise. We are waiting for the arrival of new doctors who will be placed here, either after their contract ends or they are appointed permanently.
“New doctors are expected to arrive by July 31. We will identify any deficiencies or excesses in terms of staff appointments,” he said.
Lukanisman also said that the ministry recognised a requirement for more nurses in Hospital Sibu, however, the ministry is also aware that the supply of nurses in Malaysia was limited.
“We are currently in the process of training more nurses to meet future demands," he added.
Meanwhile, he said the proposal to designate Hospital Sibu and Miri, as Regional Hospitals was part of the government's agenda under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
