Man killed, seven injured in three-vehicle crash in Pontian

PONTIAN: A 37-year-old man was killed while seven others were injured in an accident involving three vehicles at KM72.5 Jalan Johor Baru-Batu Pahat here.

Pontian OCPD Supt Mohammad Shofee Tayib said that the incident, which involved two cars and a motorcycle, was believed to have happened at about 12.10am on Saturday (July 22).

“Based on initial investigation, one of the cars, which was heading to Pontian from Benut, collided head-on with another car.

“This caused the second car to spin and was later hit by a motorcycle that was coming from Pontian,” he said in a statement here.

He added that the driver in the first car was killed at the scene after succumbing to injuries on the chest and legs.

“Five others in the same car, including four children between the ages of six and 13, were injured in the accident.

“The driver in the other car and the motorcyclist were also injured," he said, adding that the victims have been sent to the Pontian Hospital for treatment.

He said that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Pontian Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Haron Rais said they received a call about the accident in front of a school at 12.19am on Saturday (July 22).

“Seven firemen were deployed to the scene upon receiving the call. The driver of one of the cars was found stuck in the vehicle and we managed to bring him out using special tools.

“He was later confirmed dead by medical officers at the scene,” he said, adding that the other victims were later rushed to the hospital.
