Marine cop killed after vehicle crashes into drain in Sandakan

KOTA KINABALU: A police officer was killed after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a drain in the Sandakan east coast district early Saturday (July 22).

Insp Mohamad Ikhlas Rosmi, 30, who was attached to the Sandakan Marine Police Force, died at the scene following the mishap at Mile 4, Jalan Taman Indah Jaya.

It is learnt that the 30-year-old was driving a car from the city centre to his home when the incident occurred sometime after 4am.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they were alerted at 4.25am.

“The victim was trapped inside the car but firefighters managed to free him,” the spokesman said when contacted.

A medical team from the Health Ministry confirmed the man had died on the spot, he added.

Sandakan Police Chief Asst Comm Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek, who confirmed the incident, said the victim suddenly lost control of the car before it veered off the road and plunged into the drain.

“We are still establishing the actual cause for the accident,” he said, adding the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
