Woman injured after opening package containing explosives in Langkawi


LANGKAWI: Police are hunting those responsible for planting a package with explosives, causing injuries to a woman here on Saturday (July 22).

Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Shariman Ashari said in the incident that occurred at about 10am, the victim opened a package behind a restaurant at Jalan Pantai Cenang.

"At about 10.30am, we received information that a woman was injured after opening the package,” he said.

ACP Shariman said the victim, a UNHCR card holder, suffered injuries to her face and body.

A Bomb Squad and K9 police unit were deployed to the location.

He said the 26-year-old victim ran a food stall that she rented behind the restaurant.

He said the victim was sent to Sultanah Maliha Hospital to receive treatment. She is now conscious and stable.

"We don't know how many were suspects but we are on the lookout and investigating the motive of the incident," he said.

He said the case will be investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code.
