KUALA LUMPUR: Poverty will be significantly brought down this year, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, adding that this was a moral responsibility for his administration.
“When we talk about poverty, I want this issue to be resolved this year, which means (it would benefit) the majority of Malays and Indians,” he said.
“I have given a strong message that no one in this country should have a problem providing milk to babies or uniforms to children going to school.
“It is our moral responsibility as Malaysians.
“I, as the Prime Minister, will deal with this issue regardless if they are Malays or Indians or from any other background,” he said in his keynote address at the International Tamil Research Conference in Universiti Malaya here yesterday.
The Prime Minister also urged all Malaysians to reject racism and any effort to cause disharmony among the country’s various communities.
“We encourage more people to send a clear message rebuking those who want to hijack and change the course of Malaysia.
“If we can surmount this challenge, we will have a better Malaysia.
“I will continue to support this cause irrespective of race.
“If I continue to get your support, Alhamdulillah (thank God) and if not, I will accept it.
“But I will not sacrifice my principles. This great nation is for everyone,” he added.
