KUALA LUMPUR: A doctor who has been selected to defend the Bandar Baru Klang seat for DAP is looking forward to continuing to serve the constituents there.
Dr Quah Perng Fei, 49, will be contesting in the seat previously held by DAP veteran and lawyer Datuk Teng Chang Khim.
“I’m glad I am given a chance, considering my experience as a councillor in the Klang Municipal Council,” he said.
Meanwhile, Shah Alam City (MBSA) councillor Papparaidu Veraman will contest in Banting formerly held by Lau Weng San.
Papparaidu, 48, is the younger brother of Klang MP V. Ganabatirau.
“I thank the DAP leadership for this opportunity. I have vast experience as a councillor for the past 13 years in Kota Kemuning,” he said.
Dr Quah and Papparaidu are among six new candidates being fielded by DAP for the Selangor state election on Aug 12.
The others are Yew Jia Haur (Teratai), Ong Chun Wei (Balakong), Preakas Sampunathan (Kota Kemuning) and Lwi Kian Keong (Sungai Pelek).
In announcing the list of candidates yesterday, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the most senior candidate is Lee Kee Hiong, 57, who will defend her Kuala Kubu Baharu seat.
The youngest is Michelle Ng, 33, who will defend her Subang Jaya seat.
“Ten out of 15 candidates are men and five are women, while 40% comprise new candidates.
“The younger candidates come with experience. We want to field candidates who can ensure a win in all our seats and this includes the incumbents,” Loke told a press conference at the DAP headquarters.
The majority of the 15 DAP candidates are below 50 years old. The average age of the candidates is 43.6 years. No one is above the age of 60.
Besides Lee and Michelle Ng, the other incumbents are Ng Suee Lim (Sekinchan), Balakong incumbent Wong Siew Ki (Seri Kembangan), Ng Sze Han (Kinrara), Rajiv Rishyakaran (Bukit Gasing), Lim Yi Wei (Kampung Tunku), Jamaliah Jamaluddin (Bandar Utama) and Leong Tuck Chee (Pandamaran).
Former assemblymen who will not be contesting are Teng, Ean Yong Hian Wah Ean Yong (Seri Kembangan), Ganabatirau (Kota Kemuning), Lau Weng San (Banting), Ronnie Liu (Sungai Pelek) and Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof (Dusun Tua).
Loke also thanked them for making way for the new candidates.
