EC to meet on Aug 3 to discuss Pulai, Simpang Jeram by-elections


PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will meet on Aug 3 to discuss matters relating to the by-elections for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state seats.

This is after it received an official notification on Tuesday (July 25) from Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul and Johor state assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Mohd Fuad Zarkashi about the vacant seats following the death of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.

"In line with Article 54, Clause 1 of the Federal Constitution and Article 23, Clause 5, Part Two of Undang-Undang Tubuh Kerajaan Johor 1895 (the Johor state constitution), both the Pulai parliamentary seat and the Simpang Jeram state seat have to be filled in 60 days from the day they were vacated," said EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak in a statement on Tuesday (July 25).

"The EC will also be organising a special meeting next Thursday (Aug 3) which will be chaired by EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, regarding the dates of the by-elections including the election writ, nomination, polling and other preparations," he added.

Salahuddin, who was Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, died on Sunday (July 23) after suffering brain haemorrhage. He was 61.
