PETALING JAYA: Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau has lodged a police report following the uproar over a purportedly insensitive tweet on contesting the now vacant Pulai parliamentary seat.

“I lodged a report at the Sri Hartamas police station after my Twitter account was hacked by an unknown individual.

“I want to make it clear that I never uploaded the statement that went viral,” he said in a tweet late Monday (July 24) night.

On Monday, Lau came under fire after a now deleted tweet was posted from his account at 12.37pm with the caption reading "Is it okay for me to contest in Pulai?"

The post drew significant flak, with many condemning it as insensitive for being made so soon after the death of the late Pulai MP Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.

Lau later said his account was hacked and denied posting the tweet.

“The tweet did not come from Datuk Dominic or official account admins.

“Admins are attempting to trace the cause of the incident with new security protocols carried out including changing the passwords of all social media accounts," he said in a tweet on Monday.

The now deleted tweet purportedly came shortly after the remains of Salahuddin were laid to rest at the Jalan Sulong Muslim cemetery at Kampung Serkat, Pontian, Johor.

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister was buried at 12.05pm.

Salahuddin passed away after suffering a brain haemorrhage at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Kedah on Sunday (July 23). He was 61.
