Justices of Peace back Sultan’s MB prerogative

PETALING JAYA: The public should refrain from using insulting words or unduly challenging the Selangor royal institution, says Selangor Council of Justices of the Peace president Datuk Ng Seing Liong.

“The council hopes the rakyat will not easily issue words that can insult or question the capability of the Selangor royal institution on the appointment of the Selangor Mentri Besar,” he said.

Ng said the council fully supports a statement by Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah that His Royal Highness has the prerogative to appoint any qualified candidate to be chosen as Mentri Besar.

He added that such an appointment would be based on the provisions within the Laws of the Constitution of Selangor 1959 and accepted past practices.

“The candidate must be a Malay, a Muslim and adhere to the Laws of the Constitution of Selangor,” he said.

Recently, caretaker Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor courted controversy when he allegedly belittled the Sultan of Selangor for having appointed Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari as Mentri Besar.

Last Friday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said announced that existing laws may be repealed and new ones introduced to help tackle 3R (royalty, religion and race) related issues.

Concerns were raised recently by certain quarters over the possible blatant use of 3R issues, particularly during the upcoming state elections.

In a statement, Ng said that the council also extends its good wishes to Sultan Sharafuddin, who is scheduled to leave for London on July 28 to undergo treatment.
