Quick action at FA Cup final prevented further escalation, says Johor exco rep

JOHOR BARU: The authorities' quick action in controlling the provocation during the FA Cup 2023 football final match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri managed to prevent it from getting worse.

Johor youth, sports, entrepreneur development, cooperatives, and human resources committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said that the quick removal of some supporters was done so that no unwanted incident would occur either inside or outside the stadium.

“If left uncontrolled, it could lead to a huge fight between the football supporters.

“So we should be thankful for their quick action to control the situation by handling the matter immediately so that all of the ongoing provocation between supporters was stopped,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after an event at Imperial Paragon Cuisine restaurant at the Grand Paragon Hotel, here, on Tuesday (July 25).

Mohd Hairi added that he hoped the authorities would continue to take any necessary action to protect the safety and security of the general public.

“These are public places, and there are people who came here with the elderly and children,” he said, adding that he hoped football supporters would be able to show their support for the sport without any provocation.

Earlier, it was reported that the police are investigating a case where a man claimed to have been assaulted by the Johor Military Force (JMF) while watching the FA Cup final at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium here on Saturday (July 22).

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm Rahmat Ariffin said a police report was lodged by a 30-year-old man on Sunday (July 23) at 11.50am at the Sungai Besi police station in Kuala Lumpur.

“The victim claimed that he had been beaten while watching the football match between Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Kuala Lumpur (KL) City.

“The victim had returned to Kuala Lumpur and received treatment at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM),” he said in a statement here on Monday (July 24).

ACP Rahmat added that the doctor had confirmed that the victim had suffered a broken nose, bleeding on the head and right eye, and swelling all over his body.
