PETALING JAYA: A syndicate that specifically sold stolen motorcycles to foreigners was busted by the police here.
In a press conference at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters on Wednesday (July 26), OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the group was arrested following a report regarding a missing motorcycle on July 17.
“Acting on information gathered, the police arrested two foreigners aged 33 and 35 years old at a petrol station in Bandar Sri Damansara on July 21.
"A follow-up arrest of a 34-year-old local man was made in Semenyih after the two suspects had been questioned,” he said.
The arrests also led to the seizure of six motorcycles and a motorcycle frame. One of the motorcycles seized was the same vehicle that had been reportedly missing previously.
Investigations showed that the group was known to have only dealt with foreigners and would resell the stolen vehicles cheaply, with prices below RM1,000.
It is believed that the group has been active for around two months.
All suspects had been remanded until July 25 and have been transferred to Kajang police as more cases have been linked to the group in the district there.
“They would use a hair dryer to remove old stickers and paste new ones. They would also use a spray paint to paint parts over and change the number plates with fake ones,” he said.
Checks on the suspects showed that the local man had 11 prior cases on his record.
“With these arrests, the police have solved seven missing motorcycle cases, with losses estimated to be around RM35,000,” he said. (ends)
