Cops probing fake FB account in the name of TMJ's wife

JOHOR BARU: A fake Facebook account has been created bearing the name and photographs of Che’ Puan Besar Khaleeda Bustamam, the wife of Tunku Mahkota Johor, promoting an air-conditioner from Japan.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said a report was lodged by a 40-year-old man on Wednesday (July 26) about the account.

“It was a fake account which had postings with captions to give the impression that it was Khaleeda promoting a Japanese air-conditioner,” he said in a statement on Thursday (July 27).

The alleged fake account posted superimposed images of Khaleeda holding an air-conditioner.

There was also an edited family portrait of her, her husband Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim and their children with the air-conditioner on a coffee table in front of them.

The post advertised the air-conditioner as being sold at RM169 for two units with free shipping.

Comm Kamarul Zaman said the case was being investigated under Section 419 of the Penal Code for cheating by personation, which is punishable by imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine or both upon conviction.

It is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or one year imprisonment or both if found guilty.

“I want to remind the public not to abuse social media for their personal interest and risk getting in trouble with the law,” he added.

Khaleeda has a verified official Facebook page “YAM Che’ Puan Besar Khaleeda” which carries posts of her official programmes, family life and festive wishes.
