Woman and two sons jump from second floor of burning house

Burnt down: Firemen dousing the flames at the house in Kota Belud.

KOTA KINABALU: A woman and her two sons had to jump out from the second floor of their burning home in Sabah’s northern Kota Belud district.

The 46-year-old mother and her sons, aged 14 and six, suffered minor injuries to their legs in the incident yesterday at Kampung Sangkir.

Kota Belud Fire and Rescue chief Muhammad Syazwan Latun said they were alerted of the fire at 1.40am.

A team of eight firefighters and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit rushed to the location.

“However, the two-storey house was completely razed,” he said when contacted.

He said the victims told firefighters they were forced to leap out from the burning house.

“Our EMRS unit gave the three first-aid treatment on site before rushing them to hospital,” Syazwan said.

He said the fire was brought under control at about 3am, adding that the operation ended 28 minutes later.

“We are trying to ascertain the cause of the fire and assess the damage,” he added.

In another incident, six inter-connected workers quarters belonging to the Public Works Department (JKR) were destroyed in a fire at Kota Marudu district, about 120km from here, on Tuesday night.

There were no casualties in the 10.40pm incident in Jalan Korongkom.

Kota Marudu fire station chief Mohd Hasbi Hajat said a distress call was received at 10.47pm.

In an unrelated case, patients and medical staff were evacuated following an ammonia gas leak at a rural clinic in the east coast Semporna district yesterday.

A department spokesman said they were informed of the leak at 11am.

“The leak was detected on a medical freezer used to store medicines at Klinik Desa Tagasan. But there were no victims involved as the patients and medical staff evacuated the premises upon smelling gas,” he said.

On reaching the scene, he said, firefighters went on to isolate the faulty equipment and carry out the decontamination procedure.
