PUCHONG: Wong Jung Lik decided to stand as an Independent candidate for the Seri Kembangan seat only the night before nomination day.
“It was something I have been thinking about, but it was only last night that I made up my mind. I know it is a tough seat, not easy, but I had to do it.
“I felt that even though there are so many political parties, there is no proper one which represents the people,’’ he said.
Wong, 46, has been Seri Kembangan MCA public complaints bureau chief for the past 10 years.
He realised that his decision to contest as an Independent will land him in the soup with MCA.
Earlier, Wong created a stir when he appeared with his nomination papers at the MBSJ multi-purpose hall in Puchong Indah.
MCA had announced the party will not contest in the elections.
Prior to Wong’s decision to contest, the Seri Kembangan seat was anticipated to be a straight fight between DAP’s Wong Siew Ki and Liau Wei Jian from Bersatu.
Siew Ki, 37, vowed to carry on the good work of incumbent Ean Yong Hian Wah, who had served the area for three terms.
Ean Yong opted to sit out the election in order to make way for new blood. In GE14, Ean Yong defeated Chang Toong Woh of MCA.
Liau, 30, who has had experience providing service to residents in Hulu Selangor as a Bersatu member, said he is ready to work for the people in Seri Kembangan, although he is a newbie to the area.
The Seri Serdang state seat will see a three-cornered fight.
The candidates are Abbas Salimi Azmi, 43, from Amanah, Amir Abd Hadi, 32, from Muda and Mohd Shukor Mustaffa, 54, from Bersatu.
Abbas is a former Subang Jaya City councillor overseeing Zone 12. The Amanah youth chief was in charge of the traditional Malay villages in the area when he was their councillor, while Muda’s candidate Amir is the party’s founding member and secretary-general.
Mohd Shukor, a businessman, is Selangor Perikatan Nasional information chief and Puchong Bersatu division chief.
In GE14, Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud from Amanah won the seat against Datuk Mohamad Satim Diman from Barisan Nasional and Noor Hanim Ismail from PAS. The three were once incumbents in Seri Serdang.
