SINGAPORE: The Malaysian High Commission in Singapore will continue to work with non-governmental organisations to protect the welfare of Malaysian nationals in the island-state, says High Commissioner Datuk Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar.
He said the High Commission’s collaboration with Singapore NGOs include with the Muslim Converts’ Association of Singapore (MCAS), where both parties had formed close cooperation during the Covid-19 pandemic two years ago.
The MCAS has been providing aid to underprivileged Malaysians in Singapore for years, not just by delivering spiritual support, but also by supplying food and other essentials.
“Throughout the pandemic, I have maintained regular contact with the MCAS to ensure the well-being of Malaysians who are here,” said Azfar during a “korban drive” event organised by the MCAS.
This year’s event saw MCAS providing korban meat to almost 1,000 underprivileged households. The old, poor and Muslim convert families received 2kg of meat each.
Korban or sacrifice is carried out to mark the end of the annual Haj pilgrimage to Mecca. During the celebration, known as Hari Raya Aidiladha, animals such as cows and sheep are slaughtered as sacrifices to commemorate the trials of Prophet Ibrahim.
Azfar said that such activities could foster camaraderie among fellow Muslims as well as promote Islamic practices.
“This programme offers an opportunity for less privileged members of the Muslim community to partake in the blessings of korban this year,” he stated.
The MCAS annual korban drive started in 2017, aimed at promoting the spirit of giving spirit during Hari Raya Aidiladha festivities and raising awareness of the importance of korban and the virtues it instills, especially among new converts.
