Eight nabbed for alleged pro-LGBT rally, released on bail

KUALA LUMPUR: Eight people who were allegedly demonstrating against the negative treatment of the LGBT community at a shopping mall here recently were arrested and subsequently released on bail.

City police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the eight, aged between 18 and 56, were arrested on Saturday (July 29).

"We first received information about people gathered there holding placards and chanting.

"Some of the posters they carried said it was not a crime to be LGBT," he told reporters on Monday (July 31).

When asked if the group was part of a cult, he said the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department has opened investigations on the matter.

Malay news portal Majoriti had recently reported that a group gathered outside a shopping mall here allegedly to show support for the LGBT community.

It also reported that a video was uploaded to Twitter by a user who claimed the protest was held on the same day as nominations for the six state elections.

The short video showed a group of people holding posters demanding equal rights and to stop discrimination of the LGBT community.
